Myopia is nearsightedness: distant things look blurry while close-up vision stays clear. In children it usually happens because the eye grows too long, and it tends to get worse through the growth years, typically between ages 7 and 15.

Kids rarely say their vision is blurry, because what they see seems normal to them. It shows up in behavior instead: sitting close to the TV or the board, losing their place while reading, or headaches after school. A prescription that jumps at back-to-back exams is the clearest signal.

It matters beyond glasses. A more nearsighted eye carries a higher lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and myopic maculopathy. Myopia control, including Ortho-K overnight lenses, soft multifocal contacts and low-dose atropine drops, can slow progression in many children, and it starts with a pediatric eye exam.
