Contact lens on a gloved fingertip at Ozark Eye in Pea Ridge

Contact Lens Fittings in Pea Ridge

A glasses prescription isn’t a contact lens prescription. A fitting measures your eye for the lens itself, checks how it sits, and makes sure you see clearly and comfortably in it.

What happens at a contact lens fitting?
A contact lens fitting adds lens-specific measurements and an on-eye check to your eye exam. We measure the front of your eye, place trial lenses, and check how they center, how they move, and how well you see through them. Once the fit is right, you leave with a contact lens prescription, which is separate from your glasses prescription.
How we do it

A fitting that starts with your eyes.

A contact lens sits directly on your cornea, so the right lens depends on the shape and health of your eye, not just the numbers on your glasses prescription.

Same visit as your exam

A contact lens fitting can be done at the same visit as your comprehensive eye exam.

Measurements for the lens

The curvature and size of the front of your eye guide which lens will sit and move correctly.

Trial lenses, checked on the eye

We look at centration, movement, and vision with the lens in place before anything is finalized.

Contact lens checks

Shorter follow-up visits confirm the lenses are comfortable and your eyes stay healthy.

Before you book

What to know about wearing contacts.

Contact lens wearers should have an eye exam every year, even when the lenses feel fine and vision seems stable. Two habits cause a large share of the serious corneal infections we see: sleeping in lenses that aren't approved for it, and rinsing lenses in tap water.

A red, painful eye that is sensitive to light is a different problem from simple irritation. In a contact lens wearer it can be a corneal ulcer, so call the office promptly; our emergency eye care page explains what to do.

Vision plans such as VSP and EyeMed typically cover routine exams, glasses, and contacts; whether the fitting itself is covered varies by plan, so we verify your benefits before your visit. FSA and HSA cards can be used for exams and contact lenses. Cash-pay pricing depends on what your visit includes, and we'll quote it before you book.

If you wear contacts, bring your glasses to the appointment too, so your eyes can rest before certain measurements. Once the fit is final, the contact lens prescription is yours: get your lenses through our office in Pea Ridge, or take the prescription wherever you like.

FAQ

Common questions about contact lens fittings

Is a contact lens fitting the same as an eye exam?+

No. The eye exam checks your vision and the health of your eyes. The fitting adds the measurements and on-eye evaluation needed for a contact lens prescription. At Ozark Eye the two can be done at the same visit.

Why is my contact lens prescription different from my glasses prescription?+

Glasses sit a short distance in front of your eyes, while contacts sit on the eye itself. A contact lens prescription also has to name the lens that fits your eye, so it can't be written from a glasses prescription alone.

How often do I need a contact lens exam?+

Every year. Annual exams are recommended for contact lens wearers, even when your lenses feel fine and your vision seems stable.

Does insurance cover a contact lens fitting?+

Vision plans typically cover routine exams and contacts, but whether the fitting itself is covered varies by plan. Call (479) 208-6175 and we'll verify your benefits before your visit. FSA and HSA funds can be used for exams and contact lenses.

I've been told I can't wear contacts. Is that true?+

Not necessarily. If standard soft lenses never gave you clear or comfortable vision, a custom soft, RGP, hybrid, or scleral lens may. A consultation with corneal mapping is the way to find out; see specialty contact lenses.
