What exactly is an optometrist?

455 Slack St, Pea Ridge, AR (479) 208-6175 Most insurance accepted
An optometrist is a Doctor of Optometry (OD): a primary eye care doctor who examines your eyes, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and diagnoses and treats eye conditions.

Optometrists complete a four-year Doctor of Optometry program after college. Dr. Trent Daiber earned his from the Southern College of Optometry in 2021.

In practice, an optometrist checks your vision and the health of your eyes, fits contact lenses, manages conditions such as dry eye, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease, and treats urgent problems like eye infections and foreign objects. Optometrists don’t perform eye surgery; when surgery is needed, they refer you to an ophthalmologist and often handle the care before and after. An optician is different again: opticians fit and dispense eyewear rather than examine eyes.
