Diabetic eye exam and retinal screening at Ozark Eye

What is the difference between a diabetic eye exam and a regular eye exam?

A diabetic eye exam is built around the retina. It includes dilation and detailed retinal imaging to look for diabetic changes such as retinopathy and macular swelling, and the results go to the doctor managing your diabetes.

A regular comprehensive eye exam checks how well you see, updates your prescription and screens the overall health of your eyes; at Ozark Eye it takes 45 to 60 minutes. A diabetic eye exam takes about an hour including dilation, and uses retinal photography and OCT imaging to find damage before it causes symptoms.

The American Diabetes Association recommends a dilated diabetic eye exam every year, even when your vision feels fine. Because it is a medical visit, it is usually billed to medical insurance rather than a vision plan, and Medicare covers an annual diabetic retinal exam.
